Social media trends have been outlined for 2012
Internet marketing experts will continuously see the social media trends develop and change
Social media predictions made for 2012
Tuesday, January 3rd 2011 by John Burns
The founder of a digital competency consultancy has offered a number of predictions for the way in which social media will move during 2012, with a continued evolving suggested.
Tiffany St James, founder of Stimulation Ltd, has suggested that internet marketing consultants from a wide variety of businesses will continue to witness changes in the way that social media is used by businesses.
Ms St James suggested that the trend for gamification as well as geolocation seen during 2011 will continue to be prevalent in businesses’ managed emarketing strategies. The former being the trend for playing games on an online social media platform and the latter involving virtually ‘checking in’ at a physical location.
Ms St James said: “So we’ve seen geolocation, we’ve seen gamification. And I can give you some direct examples. You might have had things like Foursquare, which were really big last year and you’ve got Chromaroma.”
This has already been used to great effect by the London Underground system, according to Ms St James. She told of how Transport For London got users to check in when using the tube and then used the information to find where the bottlenecks were.
A Foursquare-style game was then used to get commuters to check in at different stations and encourage different ways of moving in order to remove bottlenecks.
Ms St James added: “We’ve seen a hundred different voucher code sites so the pressure of social buying is quite big. We’ve seen all kinds come out in the last year, but there’s a couple of really interesting ones.”
If the predictions ring true, shoppers and commuters could see their movements automatically logged via their mobile phone, tablet or other portable device in the near future. This will be seen as yet another forward motion for the advancement of social media.
