Increasing numbers of companies and internet marketing consultants will begin to explore social media in 2012, a survey by KPMG has suggested.
Currently, the UK lags majorly behind nations such as the US and China in how much the respective nations’ businesses engage with social media and its power.
At the minute, 48 per cent of UK companies regularly use social media, dramatically less than the massive 72 per cent in the US and 83 per cent in China.
However, according to the report, there will be three dawning realisations that mean businesses in the UK begin to seriously undertake the use of social media as part of their managed emarketing strategies.
The first reason highlighted by the study for this social media explosion was the onset of so-called social media games.
These will become increasingly used by companies because of their role as ‘instrinsical motivators’. It is felt that these games will increase the closeness with which brands and customers interact.
Secondly, companies will begin to realise the transparency that companies can enjoy with social media. Not just this, many firms will realise that this makes great business sense and seek to get involved with it.
Mark Guinibert, customer and channel partner at KPMG, said: “Anything less risks closing off routes to market at a time no business can afford to turn opportunities down.
“It is naive to think that social media has no place in the business world.”
The final reason suggested was that many companies will seek to exploit the advantages available with social media discussions. According to the report, this will drag many companies and their ‘social media laggards’ into the social media revolution.
Mr Guinibert added: “With multiple channels available to consumers in the shape of smart phones, tablets and laptops, the businesses that will do well will be those that can adapt and adopt.”
