Police need to become better with social media

It’s not just marketers and internet consultants that need to learn to use social media to its full extent, according to a watchdog from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC).
The watchdog recommended that the police force in the UK needs to be better at monitoring social media in future following the riots which stunned parts of the UK earlier this year.
Many social media channels were used to organise and incite parts of the riots including Facebook and Twitter while Blackberry’s instant messaging facility BBM was also used by some rioters.
The review backed up these statements, finding that many rioters and looters planned and carried out incitement of disorder using social media. That said, the review found that the police had attempted to monitor such virtual discussions which took place on these platforms in order to focus in their response.
However, the review found that these efforts fell some way short of what was actually possible using modern technology and that in future the police can, and should, do much more to ensure that social media is utilised fully.
HM chief inspector of constabulary, Sir Denis O’Connor, said: “The approach to restoring order needs to change to enable a speedier self-assured response where the threat to the public demands it.
1CAn overwhelming majority (83 per cent) of respondents to our survey thought police action helped to bring the riots to an end; but 60 per cent stated that this could have been done more quickly. 1D
One of the recommendations that the watchdog felt would help was if there was a central information ‘all source’ hub. This, in theory, would try to draw together all information related to members of the community and their social media usage.
According to the report, five people died in the riots with many more hurt, including 300 officers with trouble spanning 20 police force areas.
