New +1 traffic tracking added to Google Analytics

Internet consultants will now be able to track the performance of clients’ websites in relation to the newly launched Google +1 technology, as an equivalent to Facebook Likes.
The +1 button was originally released a few months ago on English search results and was subsequently rolled out internationally.
Websites stand to benefit from the tool, which helps sites to stand out in search engine results if they have received personal recommendations.
Google has now included a +1 tool in Google Analytics to enable webmasters to assess the value of traffic brought to their pages as a result of these recommendations.
There are three main aspects to this new enhancement. Search Impact reports will show how +1’s are affecting organic search traffic, including clickthrough rates compared against search impressions without +1 annotations.
Activity reports will show webmasters how many times pages have had a +1 added to them, while Audience reports will show where users making these recommendations are based.
A post on the Google Analytics official blog notes: “Over the next few days (and if you’re using the default version of the latest Google Analytics tracking code), if you’ve added +1 buttons to your site we’ll automatically enable Social Plugin Tracking for +1 in your account. You can enable tracking for other social plugins in just a few simple steps.”
Google Analytics also enables webmasters to track performance of social sharing buttons from other social networks, including Facebook and Twitter.
The advantage of the social tracking over event tracking is that Google Analytics creates a report that compares interactions across multiple networks, so performances can be used together to fine tune any managed emarketing campaign.
“While event tracking can track general content interactions as well, Social Tracking provides a consistent framework for tracking social interactions,” according to Google.
