Google continues to dominate the online video sector in the UK, according to the latest study from comScore.
The research company found that a total of 4.7 billion videos were viewed over the internet in April, an increase of 47 per cent compared to the same month in 2008.
Google sites, meanwhile, saw growth of 58 per cent over the course of the year, with 2.4 billion videos being watched.
YouTube accounted for 99 per cent of the search engine giant’s figures, while the site’s 18.5 million visitors saw a total of 621 million display ads.
Mike Read, senior vice-president and managing director at comScore Europe, suggested that video is likely to play an increasingly prominent role in website promotion and internet marketing.
“With nearly five billion videos viewed in the UK in April, online video is a powerful and growing vehicle for online advertising placement,” he said, adding that “this increasingly important entertainment channel” is still in its early stages.
A recent survey of marketers in the UK, conducted by new media age, found that online advertising spend is expected to grow by ten per cent over the course of this year.
