How to get top product rankings on Google by Dipika Patel
An expert has offered tips on how to get individual products listed at the top of Google’s results pages through Google Shopping.
One viable way of getting products listed at the top of search engine results pages is through Google Shopping, an expert has noted.
Writing for SEOmoz, Tom Critchlow of Distilled explained that product listings are often displayed above the standard ten search results on Google when a user looks for a particular item.
The key to getting into this coveted ‘top spot’ is by submitting products to Google Shopping via Google Base, which takes the form of a product database into which companies can enter details of their offerings for inclusion in search results, he said.
There are a number of ways in which organisations can increase their chances of getting into Google Shopping and having their products displayed in standard search, including strategically placing keywords in the ‘title’ field as a webmaster might also do in normal search engine optimisation.
Mr Critchlow also advised that products priced lower than competitor items can also be more likely to rank highly, while inserting keywords into the product description may also be helpful as Google does not scan the URLs submitted for product pages.
Other tips included filling as many data fields as possible, updating product feeds as often as possible and enabling Google Checkout as the search engine seems to look more at product reviews submitted through this service than third-party review sites.
Google Base was first launched in November 2005.
