Google launches new Sitemap generator by Lyndsey Telford
A new Sitemap generator which provides webmasters with the ability to create more effective Sitemap files is to be launched by Google.
Writing on the official webmaster central blog, trends analyst John Mueller commented that the new generator employs various ways to find URLs on the user’s website, enabling the automatic creation of different kinds of files.
This, Mr Mueller explained, is a step up from previous Sitemap generators which have to crawl websites or list files on a server.
“Our new open-source Google Sitemap Generator finds new and modified URLs based on your webserver’s traffic, its log files or the files found on the server,” he said.
Such functions, according to Google, lead to the fast recovery of URLs and therefore more effective Sitemap files.
Google’s new generator comes in the form of a server plug-in, which can be installed on both Linux/Apache and Microsoft IIS Windows-based servers.
Meanwhile, Google has further cause to celebrate after recent research revealed that it dominated the US search market share in 2008.
Experian company Hitwise showed in its survey of web users that Google accounted for 72.07 per cent of all searched in the US in the six-month run-up to December.
