Businesses that strive to offer a good website user experience may be more likely to reap the benefits of enhanced search engine optimisation (SEO).
This is according to Mark Johnson of Search Engine Watch, who said that usability principles often cross over with certain elements of SEO – meaning that marketers should concentrate on putting users first.
He gave the example of seizing the opportunity to include keywords in internal anchor text links as a way of improving both usability and SEO, as the addition of such links not only helps users to find relevant information elsewhere on the site quickly, but also helps to organically optimise web pages for inclusion in search listings.
Mr Jackson also went on to note the problems associated with failing to offer adequate accessibility, stating: “Accessibility is very much aligned with usability. If your website isn’t accessible through Safari on a Mac, you’re missing an opportunity and creating a bad user experience for someone.
“If your site isn’t accessible to blind people, you may be setting yourself up for a lawsuit.”
Last year’s Usability and User Experience Report from E-consultancy highlighted the main benefits of improving website usability for businesses, including improved conversion rates, increase customer loyalty and retention, and an enhanced brand reputation.
