Software as a Service
Will Software as a Service ever take over traditional means of licensing?
SaaS: Security software market poised for growth
It seems that firms are keen to use software as a service (SaaS) as a means of boosting their security credentials, if the results of a new survey are anything to go by. Gartner believes that the security software market will increase its revenues by 11 per cent over the course of this year. Despite a slowdown in the wider economy, it seems firms are nonetheless keen to boost their spending in this area.
With so many high-profile security breaches over recent months, it may not come as a surprise that firms want to ensure they are doing all they can to keep hackers out. Banks throughout Europe, for example, were recently identified by M86 Security as being at risk from fraudsters seeking to take both money and personal information. Meanwhile, Google Android-powered handsets have also been subject to a virus in recent days.
Experts at Gartner identified that market conditions are as such that software such as this is likely to prove a success with businesses. “Security software vendors that have a balanced mix of channel, new license and maintenance revenue streams and flexibility in contractual terms, such as SaaS, open source and outsourcing, have the strongest options for continued growth and to even out the risk,” noted Ruggero Contu, principal research analyst at the firm.
Senior research analyst Matthew Chung echoed these comments, suggesting that over the next six to 12 months, information delivered via SaaS is likely to take up more traditional forms of software licensing.
He emphasised that as firms face growing threats – and a changing fraud landscape – they will have to do more than simply be passive in order to minimise their exposure. After all, companies that are repeatedly attacked by fraudsters have a lot of work to do when it comes to mending their public relations.
